Family Style chronicles an urban mom’s search for DC area restaurants that both kids and adults will enjoy.
With everything going on these days – Hurricane Sandy, the Presidential Election – we all deserve a little fun.
I had never heard of kiddie happy hours before, but when I began looking for family activities, I read about bars that offer little ones a place to run around and play while parents enjoy food and drink specials.
The Reef in Adam’s Morgan, for example, has family happy hour from 5-8 p.m. on Fridays. It’s a no-frills neighborhood bar with three levels: the first floor, the main floor referred to as the Reef level, and the popular rooftop featuring city views.
During family happy hour, kids have the run of the huge main level. You’ll find toddlers of all ages on the dance floor rocking out to ‘80s music and disco lights or pressed up against The Reef’s five salt water tanks watching colorful fish and live coral, while their parents are commiserating over drinks. The restaurant has an extensive menu of cocktails and beers on tap.
My 21-month-old Alex danced the whole time we were there, stopping only to grab some french fries, though the place serves up more than that. Among the tasty grub fit for kids and grown-ups: bison burgers and mac and cheese.
It’s weird to be in a bar and see kids running around, bumping into each other and throwing the occasional tantrum. But everyone who comes to family happy hour gets it.
So enjoy that glass of wine, even if the baby is crying. No one will give you a nasty look.
